Bosch, Blees and Urban Claim Titles at Dragon Wrestling Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Individual titles from Blake Bosch, Adam Blees and Mike Urban led the way for the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team at the 12th annual Dragon Open held on Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.

No team scores were kept. More than a dozen teams, including Division I North Dakota State, had wrestlers compete at the event.

Bosch won at 133 pounds in the Red Division. He beat Augsburg’s Jacob Raymond by technical fall (20-5) and followed with a 21-2 technical fall win over Joseph Murillo. Bosch then beat Dragon teammate Shane Novak, who was wrestling unattached, by a 16-0 technical fall. He wrapped up the day with an 8-2 win over No. 3-ranked Joe Calderone of LIU Post to claim the title with a 4-0 record. Novak would finish fourth in the class.

Blees claimed the first tournament title of his collegiate career by winning the 165-Pound Red Division. He opened with a pin of Marcos Perez of Rochester Technical and Community College and then edged Christopher Schmidt of Ridgewater College, 4-3 in overtime. Blees than beat Ed Ramirez Jr. of LIU Post 13-4 and topped Connor Hanson of RCTC 5-2 in the finals.

Urban won the title at 184 pounds (Red Division) for his first tournament win of his collegiate career. He opened with a 10-4 win over Eri Gonzalez of Northland Community and Technical College and followed with a 3-2 win over Logan McGinn of LIU Post. Urban then beat Tim Young (unattached), 4-2 and recorded a 5-4 win over Alexander Bleeker of NDSU in the finals to secure the win, capping off a 4-0 day.

Junior Garret Hoffner’s solid season continued with a third-place finish in the 157-pound Red Division. He opened with a 13-3 major decision win over Zach Pickering of Jamestown and then beat Cory Ashe of LIU Post by technical fall 16-1 in the quarters. Hoffner suffered a tough 4-2 loss to NDSU’s Andrew Fogarty in the semifinals but came back to beat Pickering (8-3) and Nick Mergen of NDSU (9-6) to take third.

Freshman Dylan Connell was fourth at 149 in the Red Division. He lost to Matt Langan of LIU Post 4-0 but battled back with a pin of Samuel Gilseth of NDSU (1:12) and a 9-3 win over Cory Hasbrough of Itasca Community College to reach the consolation semifinals. Connell edged junior teammate Isaac Novacek, 5-3 to advance to the third-place match, where he fell to Langan, 5-1. Novacek finished in sixth after taking a medical forfeit in the fifth-place match.

Junior Austin Warren was fourth at 197 (Red Division) with a 1-3 record. Competing unattached, junior Nader Abdullatif was fourth at 285 (Red Division), with wins over Vincent Feola of NDSU (9-1), James Louison of LIU Post (7-1) and a pin of Chase Nottestad of RCTC.

Freshman Cody Anderson was second in the 197-pound White Division, which was a round-robin format. He went 2-2 on the day.

In the White Division, freshman Emmett Fink was fourth at 149 pounds after going 2-2, with freshman Erik Loepp placing fifth, also going 2-2. Fink beat Loepp, 5-0 in the consolation bracket.

Freshman Kyle Ford was fifth in the 141 White Division with a 2-2 mark.

MSU-Moorhead Dragon Open Results

MSUM is off until Jan. 8-9, 2016 when the Dragons compete at the Virginia Duals.
