Flight Operations Are Stopped Every Year To Make Way For A Temple Procession In God’s Own Country
Kerala or ‘God’s own country’ is true to its name as its people continue to observe age-old rituals and practices with full fervour and enthusiasm. But what is less known about this biannual event is the fact that airport operations are closed every year in the state to make way for the procession.
The main runway at the Thiruvananthapuram airport is closed every year for a few hours so that the ‘Arattu’ procession which means the ritual bath from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the state capital can pass through the runway on its way to the Shankhumukam beach. During the procession, the head of the royal family of the Travancore kingdom still escorts the idols during the procession donning his traditional attire.
