Hamilton suggests ‘super weekend’ format for ‘boring’ venues
Lewis Hamilton believes it’s time F1 consider revamping its weekend format, suggesting some drastic changes at venues where the racing is particularly “boring”.
F1 is mulling a change to its qualifying format for 2019, dividing the all-important Saturday afternoon session into four segments instead of three in a bid to generate more excitement.
But Hamilton thinks the sport should go well beyond such a tweaking and consider a complete overhaul of proceedings at certain tracks, and favour a more dynamic approach that could even include reverse grids!
“I think one of the biggest changes that needs to be made is that at the moment it is the same four days, every weekend, for 21 weekends every single year pretty much,” said the current leader of the F1 world championship.
“I think it needs to be dynamic. It needs to be different for certain circuits so you have a ‘super weekend’. There are some tracks where the race is so boring.”

Hamilton remembers his past experiences as a mere viewer when races were void of action.
“I remember growing up watching [F1] and falling asleep after the start. I am sure there are people who fall asleep after the start and wake up when they set their alarms for the end,” he added.
“I used to do it when I was younger, and there were some tracks that kept you on the edge of your seat, like I imagine Baku this year.”
Interestingly, Hamilton says he is having the time of his life driving the current crop of cars, but acknowledges that the racing itself is falling short of expectations.
“I think it is more exciting this year, being in these cars is the best it has ever been. But I am sure there are still dull races,” he said.
“So picking those ones out and saying, how can we make it different for that race? Whether it is reverse grid or whatever we end up doing, they should look into doing that.”
